Citizen Kris’s review published on Letterboxd:
This film is considered a comedy, but it's more grounded. Quieter. Tamer than that. This is a tasteful tightrope walk into alcoholism and its consequences.
Druk (Another Round in English) doesn't totally present a conflict that's so new: Stuck in a rut. Need to wake up. And certainly, alcohol is not a new solution. Now, the execution of its use is unique. Thomas Vinterberg approached alcohol consumption as a scientific exercise. Martin (Mads Mikkelsen), Tommy (Thomas Bo Larsen), Peter (Lars Ranthe), and Nikolaj (Magnus Millang) are going through different conflicts in both their personal and professional lives; likely due to individual midlife crises.
This film shows the two extremes of upped alcohol consumption; both the benefits and the consequences. "I feel something, even when I'm sober" is a key line, because there is a recognition of likely a placebo effect, yet, the course of action is to up the ante. That's where the consequences come in.
Mikkelsen and Vinterberg are a match made in actor/director heaven. Mads's performance was wonderfully tame, honest, and emotionally relatable.
It's atypical and sincere about the portrayal of alcoholism. The ending leaves you thinking.
