The Woman King is a much better action film than Prince-Bythewood's last, The Old Guard. Although the violence is held back by its PG-13 rating, it doesn't take away too much from the thrills established when the Agojie go to war. The performances by Davis and Boyega are fantastic, and it's refreshing to see such a fantastic crew of women both in front of and behind the camera. The dialogue could have been stronger and the plot less formulaic, but I can definitely see myself giving this a higher rating on rewatch. I'd love to see more unique films at a mid-budget level like this one.
