  The Lost City 2022

  This is very dumb sometimes but very entertaining.

  I'd only give this 2.5 stars for being a middle-of-the-road adventure story or middle-of-the-road rom-com. But it's got some magic. Several of the gags are GREAT! The leads are really great. Brad Pitt's bit is great. The craft is great. As a date movie, it's great!

  Does it do anything new? No. Will it be easily forgotten? Yes. Is the screenplay well thought out? Absolutely not. Are any of the weak parts so weak they actually take you out of the fun ride? Not really.

  I loved seeing a Raimi movie. That is to say, I loved the parts of it that are a Raimi movie. And the actors and craftsmanship are all fine. And there were some great surprises and treats. And some great scenes.

  And a massive glut of crap bogging it down. So much exposition. So much weight to bolt it into the other MCU stories. So many cool things happening to so many cool people that we care nothing about.

  This is an incredible debut effort from Abrams. It has style. He introduces a couple of new characters with staying power. It has the series' best bad guy. Hoffman does sooooo much with so little. Cruise finds a groove and redefines a new foundation for Hunt. There are some 20m nail-biter stretches. They made some gutsy decisions that paid off.

  The downsides are it is so breakneck you don't really get to "know" any characters. And you lose the thriller,…

  Very minor spoiler... More like, "this is what this movie is" warning. Skip it if you want to go in blind.

  Not at all what I thought I was in for. I went in blind and expected more of a heist flick. But this is a slice of life, based on a true story, character study built around a bank robbery. This is a case where I think one is better knowing that, and not going in blind.
