Alita: Battle Angel was pretty alright over all. I think the action and visual effects are what really put it over the line, along with some over all pretty great moments, but there was too much I didn’t like about the film for me to rate it any higher. I hated the writing and characters. Quite literally, apart from maybe Alita, I did not give a shit about a single character, they were all horrible people. Dr. I do refusing to put Alita in her own body just so she would stay in his daughter’s was so fucked up and he never learned or had any character growth or even realize or acknowledge that that was extremely wrong of him. Hugo was also a piece of shit paralyzing and stealing body parts of people, and Alita just readily forgives him, even though it’s a completely vile and reprehensible act no matter if he learned from it. Then of course there’s the character whitewashing, making Dr. Ido played by Christoph Waltz as the biggest and most glaring issue, which really just made it hard to enjoy lots of parts of the film. There were also weird sexist moments with Alita, like the scene where she tells Hugo she’ll give him anything he wants and she’s there to make him happy and literally tries to give him her heart?? Wtf was that about?? The action and visual effects were cool, but god the shitty writing and characters just made the movie almost impossible to really enjoy.
