Godzilla Minus One 2023
Where Anno’s take was a tight and perhaps caustic bureaucratic farce, Yamazaki opts for a return to form with some high (shonen-esque) melodrama. Which means this is a deeply populist renegotiation with the indissoluble trauma of the A-bomb, but more importantly I think a challenge to the fascistic masochism of an Imperial past, which both earnestly imagines grassroots collective action in the face of disaster and rejects suffering as cosmically necessary. All the emotional beats hit. Beautiful score too. Heart still fluttering. I really enjoyed it.

My mom took me to see this movie when i was 8. for some reason it absolutely wrecked me like no movie ever had before, i was legit screaming and crying in the theater and she was super embarrassed. but after the initial emotional trauma was through i became obsessed with the movie. i drew CJ7s everywhere. i constantly talked about it. i played a CJ7 widget game on our iMac dashboard. CJ7 was my entire existence.
