Napoleon 2023
Probably not one for the history buffs, but I found Napoleon to be a largely successful look at the spectacle of Napoleon’s reign, on the battlefield and in the bedroom.. Funnier than you’d expect and Scott hasn’t lost his mojo when it comes to capturing massive battle sequences. But the real greatness comes from Napoleon and Josephine’s interactions, their relationship is complicated and layered, but also feels very childish and immature, but rightfully never demonizes Josephine. The general structure feels a bit unwieldy at times, but I think this could actually be benefited from a longer directors cut (that’s supposedly on the way, classic Ridley)

Thanksgiving 2023
Thanksgiving has some fun kills and set pieces with a nasty bite of seasonal humour, but I found most other aspects pretty bad. There’s one great and one terrible performance towards the end, and I’m still not convinced about Eli Roth being an even halfway decent filmmaker.

Thirteen Days 2000
I love a good US historical romp, Thirteen Days chronicles the tense fortnight in the White House from the perspective of generals, high politicians and the President, played quiet brilliantly by Bruce Greenwood, maybe my favourite on-screen showing of JFK. But the whole cast is brilliant, even with Kevin Costner’s horrendous Boston accent. Roger Donaldson’s direction is so sturdy and taut but you never feel that 140 minute runtime, it’s good stuff. Maybe the quintessential dad movie.

Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. 2023
Super endearing and lovingly crafted, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. has an immense amount of care poured into it by Kelly Fremon Craig, there’s moment where kids are just living their best lives and it’s really wonderful. Some of the adult drama stuff felt a little rushed near the end, but I really enjoyed this.

Past Lives 2023
You dream in a language I can’t understand
Straight away, it’s obvious that Past Lives is a phenomenally strong first feature from Celine Song, there’s so much beautiful simplicity in the screenplay and such bold and confident direction behind the camera, she’s done an immense job and sits up there with other filmmaking giants when it comes to debute feature films. But on top of that, you have the three lead performances from Lee, Yoo and Magaro that are also…
