Judas and the Black Messiah

Judas and the Black Messiah ★★★★

Shaka King's rousing, angering "Judas and the Black Messiah" is a expectedly powerful piece of work. Wedding the human poetry, cultural struggle, and oppressive politics of its 20th century epoch, that work tells the story of two men locked in opposition by machinations larger than the individual. The story is searing; and, though it may flag due to lacking specific dissection of some of the narrative's historical swaths, it is held aloft by the two stellar performances at its core. King, Daniel Kaluuya, Lakeith Stanfield, and company offer a stinging, magnetic, and necessary experience.
