Fear Street: 1666

Fear Street: 1666 ★★★½

The Fear Street Trilogy (2021)

-Potential spoilers below-

The Fear Street Trilogy follows the town of Shadyside and the curse that has been terrorizing its residents for hundreds of years.

The trilogy begins with Fear Street: 1994 and introduces us to the story of Sarah Fier, a “witch” that was once executed and has now placed a curse on the town of Shadyside. This instalment focuses on a group of teenagers trying to escape a masked killer. Through a cat-and-mouse chase, we learn that this isn’t the first time a series of murders like this has taken place in Shadyside.

Following from 1994, Fear Street: 1978 takes us back to the events that occurred during a tragic massacre at Camp Nightwing. Diving deeper into the story of Sarah Fier, we learn more about the past murders that have plagued this town. Intertwining perfectly with 1994, we learn twists about characters from the previous instalment but are also introduced to a fresh new cast.

Lastly, Fear Street: 1666 takes us through the origin story of Sarah Fier and what lead to her execution. This movie is essentially two in one- the first half an origin story that takes us through the events leading to the curse of Shadyside. The second half transports us back to 1994 where the final fight for survival takes place.

These movies were absolutely fantastic. Without a doubt I have some criticisms- mostly in regards to the casting and each movies runtime. I personally felt that the core leads would have been more suitable as supporting actors/actresses. On the other hand, you had supporting actresses such as Sadie Sink (Ziggy) and Julia Rehwald (Kate) that were clear standouts and deserved more screen time. Each instalment probably ran for 20 minutes longer than they needed to and typically had moments that began to drag. But those are very minor criticisms when compared to how entertaining the entire trilogy was. Gory, fun, full of surprises and “oh my god!” moments- The Fear Street Trilogy was exactly what I needed to binge during my 31 Days of Horror. I highly recommend checking it out if you haven’t yet!
