Chad Fey’s review published on Letterboxd:
Going in to this one, I thought Ma looked like another fun yet forgettable teen horror comedy from Blumhouse, with QUEEN Octavia Spencer to add a little class to the thing. What I got was so much better. This is straight up a modern version of the Canadian exploitation slashers that came in the wake of Carpenter’s Halloween. Serious Prom Night vibes in this one. Much meaner & nastier than I expected. A pleasant surprise, indeed. Really wish the trailers didn’t give away a few of the major twists but whatever, Ma has a whole lot more to offer.
Octavia is on some Joan Crawford/Bette Davis level shit here. It’s so goddamn glorious. Ma is pure camp and I loved it.
