    Holy shit! This movie exists!

It’s a real thing! It’s just not a figment of our imaginations! It’s extant guys! Time to celebrate! Woo!

You’ll excuse me for the exuberance. At certain points, I was convinced that this was a project that would never see the light of day. First, there was the fact that it was in development hell for a hella long time. Losing director after director. Writer after writer.

And all that rigamarole happened before it was…

    James Gunn, you magnificent whore!

To demonstrate that writer-director James Gunn is a whore who is magnificent. Please consider that I was tearing up… Oh, maybe ninety seconds into the runtime of this movie.

OK, OK. It’s true that the meta discussion surrounding this movie had primed me to be emotional at the outset. And considering that I was watching Vol. 3 for the first time as part of an IMAX marathon, my sentimentality was extra high. I was sleep-deprived.…

I’m genuinely surprised that this movie was allowed to be made.

It’s not subversive. It’s not subtly criticizing current social trends in a wink-wink way. It’s getting up in peoples’ faces and open-palm slapping a bitch.

And the target is the ultra-woke. In particular, the unthinking white liberals whose brand of performative activism does more harm than good. But the self-satisfied cultural warriors of all colors are roasted to an inch of their life.

What makes this surprising is that…

Wait… Was this supposed to be a comedy? Did I miss a memo or an email?

This certainly wasn’t the movie I was expecting, that’s for sure. Not after Ridley Scott made the excellent “The Last Duel” a couple of years ago. I thought “Napoleon” would be another historical epic in that same vein.

Well, Napoleon does attempt to be epic - and certainly in the well-executed war scenes, it succeeds. But it also has an absurdist veneer that I…

    OK, personal story time:

Like I'm sure is the case with many in the Letterboxd community, I was relentlessly bullied in grade/middle/high school. I came of age during the 1990s. I'm a black dude who likes academics and wears glasses... So, of course, the weapon-of-choice by my tormentors was very often Steve Urkel. I grew up in New Mexico and like many other places in the country it was considered uncool for black and Latino students to be smart or…

I've watched homosexual pornography with more cinematic and Christian merit than this dreck, and i'm not even joking.

Speaking of pornography, what's with Cameron's near-masturbatory obsession with Hot Chocolate?

Whoever is responsible for conceptualizing Deandre is a white supremacist.
