The way I think of this film, is that the main character has assigned meanings and expectations to the world he inhabits, and then responds to those meanings and expectations, that is fuelled by anxiety. So instead of us seeing things as they are, we are instead seeing things through the lens in which he specifically sees the world. There is a de-emphasis on the objective state of the environment and people around him, and an emphasis instead on his…

    The Seashell and the Clergyman

This was an interesting watch, it seems to be about a man who wants to have an affair, and it tormented by that. The way this is depicted is my making his interior world of dreams, exterior and depicted on screen. The film has a surreal and symbolic quality, it is less about story, dialogue (it is a silent film), and more about capturing a mood, a feeling, a state of mind, being a witness to a dream, and someone's subconscious coming to terms with, and grappling with repressed desire.

Javier Bardem is brilliant in this, as the character Anton Chigurh. There is a palpable sense of terror, and an air of cold foreboding evil whenever he is on screen. A real sense of the sinister. Narratively this film is about the theft of money, and the attempt to recover said money, and the chase that ensues because of that, crafted in a way that builds suspense.

On a thematic level, it deals with chance, the idea that there is…

    The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

I personally think this is the greatest horror film ever made, and this can be connected to several reasons. A significant reason being, it feels like being plunged into darkness, and how that can happen in an instant. Which is tied to the idea, of wanting to see some order, some design, some guiding force, but ultimately being met with silence and an indifferent universe. Bad horrific things are happening, not for any understandable reason, it just simply is. There…
