Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl ★★★★½

Still holds up as fun, satisfying swashbuckling adventure after nearly 20-years. I think it speaks to how studios don't make many of these grand adventure/big personality films with the same care.

There's nothing like it - especially if you consider at the time the risk of bringing on Johnny Depp who was struggling at the box office at the time. It's like Iron Man and RDJ - it's simply perfect casting and it's clear the risk was outweighed by the reward for both franchises.

I wish they stuck with a one and done because it works so well as a self contained story. Better idea would be to skip making it all a long story and just go with a whole new adventure - because with all due respect to Bill Nighy,, Ian McShane and Javier Bardem the sequels didn't add much... Hell, I can't recall much if anything about them if I ever saw them.

The villains have a great story along with the heroes. The action set pieces are fun and easy to follow. The effects are brilliant. The whole thing is fantastic summer fun!
