The humor, action, characters and story work because of the story has a strong emotional core.
Family. No matter if you have a good one or a not-so-good one - it’s something we all have feelings about. We can all relate in some manner with the Guardians because of this concept affects them all.
We love Star-Lord because he loves his Mama so much that he loses all impulse control. We feel for Nebula and Gamora because they dislike each other so much because their father was abusive and pitted them against one another. We love Yondu because he gave up his clan to protect his family. And Rocket - he tries hard to keep everyone at arms length and is 100% a dick - but family still keeps him close... because that’s family.
There’s a singular vision working across this film and without it nothing would work. I don’t know how ‘a movie by committee’ method would ever produce something this special - and thank goodness they stumbled upon James Gunn.
I love love love love this movie!!! It makes me laugh and cry... And after multiple viewings I think it’s safe to say it’s the best Marvel movie. Top 3 would probably look like Guardians vol 2, Ragnarok and Infinity War.
