Kong: Skull Island

Kong: Skull Island ★★★

It ain't high art, but it's pretty to look at, is basically where this falls--I think Jordan Vogt-Robert's embrace of the pulpy elements here (to set up a King Kong vs Godzilla movie) plays stronger than last year's Godzilla remake AND (for me, anyhow) Peter Jackson's Kong remake. It's not particularly deep, but the end-of-period Vietnam setting does give it a little bit of an edge wrt the American War Machine (Tm Netflix) and the actors are given the right amount of stuff to do-it started slow, but it picked up for me a lot after that initial helicopters vs Kong showdown. The Kong CGI itself is a little less convincing than 'Zilla (possibly b/c of the fur? The Water Buffalo looked a little fake as well) but Vogt-Roberts gives cover for it with some genuinely audacious editing and framing choices (there are two instances where I just laughed out loud). If I were 12 years old, I would probably love this (and I'm not saying that as a knock on 12-year-olds)
