Carter Anderson’s review published on Letterboxd:
I first watched this movie during a fan event on Tuesday and then again that following Thursday. I have been putting off reviewing it because I am not to sure how I feel about it and what rating I should give it.
This batman movie is incredibly different then any other batman we have seen and im not entirely sure how I feel about it. On one hand I am in love with this movie and most of me believes it is the best comic book movie released to date. On the other thinks it didnt feel like I was watching a Batman movie I felt like I was watching a mystery thriller with a detective that was good at fighting.
The Pros:
The cinematography in this movie is phenominal and is for sure in my top 10 most beautiful movies ive ever seen. The action in this movie is really good for how much we got. The acting in this movie is also amazing, every single actor in their role really played their character so well I legit felt like I was watching real life interactions and not scripted. This take on Batman the superhero was the best I have ever seen. The way they showed him both a vigilante and a superhero really reflected what batman is and what his point of existing is. Robert Pattinson is the best Batman to date and I cant wait to see more of him. I loved the back and forth we got with Jim Gordan and Batman and I am super excited to see more of their relationship
The Cons:
I was not a fan of catwomen in this movie. Zoe gave a stellar performance as catwomen and while I did like her character I just feel like it is to early in this batmans story to add her in. This was our first movie with this batman and we didnt really know exactly what he is. I feel like we needed to explore more into Batman and Bruce Wayne before we add in a love interest into his story. I was also semi confused on why we got so little of Bruce Wayne. The Bruce we got barely spoke as Bruce and when he had conversations i felt as if he was still Batman and not Bruce. When Christan Bale played Bruce i felt as if he was a complete different person than batman and saw it as almost a split personality that was working together with batman because obviously most of Bruces actions reflect on helping Batman. This Bruce we got didnt show us that much of the other half of Batman and i felt a little dissapointed. While I was not expecting No Way Home level of fan service I was expecting a little more. There were some scenes that had me so hype but then I felt a little let down when it ended as it could have been a lot better.
Overall I do think this movie is 5 Stars but I wouldnt say its a 5 star batman movie. It is closer to a 5 than a 4.5 but it isnt a perfect 5. Im sure with the more movies we see of this Batman it will effect how I feel about this specific movie but for right now I feel like it could have been a little bit better in showing Bruce Waynes Character.
