A beautiful piece of animated cinema and easily among Studio Ghibli’s best. Kiki’s Delivery Service superbly blends the conventions of slice of life and fantastical coming of age story, seamlessly interweaving the two in a way that not only carries its complex and multi-layered themes of growing up, self acceptance, loneliness, knowing who to rely on, finding peace in your friendships and coming to terms with shades of grey and darkness in the world, but also presents them with a child like imagination and perspective that still never feels condescending to its young audience.
