Miserable. That so many died because of this is just tragedy compounding tragedy.

I’d wager that John Wayne understood less than a third of his lines. It’s like he’s purposefully mispronouncing every single Mongol name.

Even setting aside the terrible casting and racism, this was never going to be good. It’s as though they sought out the least interesting Khan story imaginable, then padded it out with frequent horse chases and flaccid combat.

A thought-provoking (if somewhat repetitive) discussion of Shylock and the legacy of The Merchant of Venice. Howard Jacobson’s insistence on Shylock’s positive attributes is an interesting notion, but it’s the vehemence with which several of the other interviewees find the play indefensible that sticks with me the most:

Merchant of Venice is a cold, disturbing, loveless play. And if it were by any author other than William Shakespeare, it would not be staged.” - Daniel Hannan.

The play’s the problem…My whole experience of doing that play over two years, was sort of coming to the conclusion that it doesn’t work anymore.”- Antony Sher.

Impossible to fully nail down, but this feels like it’s exactly what it wants and needs to be— seamlessly weaving between meta-commentary, comedy, and brutally honest therapy session.

    Assayas never misses.

Over 80% of this movie is characters walking through poorly animated forests and fields. No music, just the same clip of bird chirps on repeat. That is actually preferable to the rare occasions when the characters screech something in poor English.

For 90 seconds, a green alien materializes and performs an award winning dance, but even that brilliance can’t redeem the rest.
