Work in progress; only ~1250 films are in order so far. This is a chronological cinematic history of the world. Check the notes for dates, locations, and events if you want to search for films in whichever era or country peaks your fancy. This history is told through films, TV miniseries, documentaries, short films, web videos, and even music videos that evoke the spirit and atmosphere of the times they're based on, from the most spectacular epic to the smallest slice of life. Mythical and legendary eras and wholly inaccurate historical fiction have been included since they fit this category. So too have contemporary films from the 20th and 21st centuries that, through their embodiment of a historical zeitgeist, inadvertently or not, serve as time capsules of their eras; rather than representing history, they themselves are historical texts. This list began as a catalogue for my own use of films set in the 17th century, an era I felt was unduly under-represented. It gradually grew into something bigger, serving not only as a catalogue for myself and fellow history lovers to locate films and shows set in eras and places of interest, but also as a monument to the kaleidoscopic mosaic of the human condition in all its varieties and connections. To this end I've also attempted to include as many eras, countries, and genres as possible. I've also tried to balance quality with titles covering less popular eras e.g. the sword-and-sandals B-movies depicting decisive periods of ancient history. The list is so long that the webpage / app is immensely slow and often crashes, however I will do my best to keep organising it as a sort of digital knitting activity.
