Still suffers from one of PTA's biggest hang ups (i.e. super self-conscious), but Hoffman and Phoenix really work the material. At its best this is a pretty incredible feat of tonal balance, playing out dumb gags that will suddenly pivot into deep pathos. Very interesting script, and possibly PTA's most exacting and nuanced read on masculinity's violent, self-defeating nature.
