Minding the Gap

Minding the Gap ★★★

Much of my respect for this stems from Bing Liu's ability to comfortably and appropriately roll with each new horrible revelation, treating all of his subjects with tact and respect, and always figuring out how to tie the new information into his overall thesis. One wonders how much was edited down and how the timeline was manipulated, but either way the results are smart.

That all said, this feels like yet another 2018 "movie" that doesn't really feel like one. Minding the Gap's closest aesthetic comparison point would be MTV's docu-reality programs - I often found myself anticipating a teen mom voiceover that would never arrive. A little more excusable in this case, what with the project being as small as it is, but wouldn't it be nice if the movie had good takes and good aesthetics?
