The Hidden Fortress

The Hidden Fortress ★★★★

"Get away from me! You stink of dead bodies!"
"Give it up. We both stink of dead bodies. And it's all your fault!"

Kurosawa makes a film purely for the purposes of entertainment and inadvertently gives the world C-3PO and R2-D2... Nicely done, sir.

The Hidden Fortress isn't my favorite Kurosawa film, by any stretch, but it does show a different side of him as he focuses on two supporting characters whose main traits are stupidity and greed and still manages to make a sweeping adventure story out of it.

Toshirô Mifune, per the usual, is a force of nature. The scene where he's surrounded by an army of armored enemies while carrying a single sword, which he gives up, by the way, and still manages to intimidate them enough to make them step back is one of his best. Definitely worth a look.
