stands out from a crowd of joyless 2000s big-budget blockbusters in a couple ways: it's eccentric in its bones, right down to Depp's weirdo performance (reading up on the production after and Disney's general skepticism it makes sense how refreshing this feels), and there's a real commitment to the pirate backdrop that's unique in itself. still feels a bit bloated at times, but it's brisk enough to not matter much, with a satisfying setpiece-to-talking ratio for this kind of movie. pretty good!
