idiot who likes nearly everything; coward afraid to commit to over 4 stars
From the Schrader films I'm familiar with this reminded me most of Bringing Out the Dead since it's a lot of Defoe just cruising around and hanging with various weirdo drug addicts as he slowly loses his mind. It's got an awesome soundtrack, Defoe's great, obviously, as is Sarandon in addition to being an absolute smokeshow. Otherwise hits all the Schrader notes pretty dependably and nothing beyond that, fine with me.
2018's The Mule, a very good movie in its own right, was a quietly moving and nakedly obvious view into how Clint seems to view himself - as a guy who just loves his work (in the movie, flowers; in reality, movies) and can't stop doing it, even at personal peril or the risk of losing his family, who mostly fucking hates him.
