Distant

Distant ★★★★

A stunning movie visually as you move to Istanbul with the younger cousin from the country looking for a new life in the big city. The slow pace of the movie is entrancing, the way you are made to confront the loneliness, disconnection and distance between people in the city is so convincing. I gave up quickly looking for a moving story line and found myself immersed in each scene and if effect on me and the characters in the movie. The dead half sunken ship was hauntingly beautiful as well as the strange scene of older more experienced cousin getting stuck in the mouse tape instead of the mouse. In some ways it felt as if the city itself served as a kind of prison that kept people from connecting and needing each other.
