This is just such a brilliant heartwarming pretty much perfect film that’s a lot darker and funnier than I remembered.
The comedy is almost like Monty python/Mel Brooks satire like the whole world is obsessed with chocolate and would do anything to get one of those golden tickets.
The directing is very revolutionary and though the Oompa Loompa dance numbers and some other stuff are very early 70s hippieish but somehow it still holds up and all the effects still like really good.
The acting from the entire cast is amazing and does fantastic in building their characters really well. Aubrey Woods, Nora Denney, Roy Kinnear, Jack Albertson, Paris Themmen, Denise Nickerson, Julia Dawn Cole, Peter Ostrum, fucking Gene Wilder.
Wilder’s Willy Wonka is absolutely amazing in being charming and welcoming but also mysterious and sadistic and maniac in his talking backwards, saying random and creepy things like “nobody’s head has fallen off, yet”, speaking in different languages, the boat ride, his Oompa Loompas, but still he’s a good person and he’s just seen some bad people in the world until Charlie comes along, so pure, but flawed, like any normal person.
It’s music sticks with you, cheer up Charlie and pure imagination being extreme standouts. I don’t really know why Grandpa Joe had to sing about being “over the moon in ecstasy”, but ok.
Just such a masterful heartwarming film that just really puts a smile on your face.
Burton, here I come again.
