Anya Taylor-Joy recommends you to watch The Witch, Gladiator and Braveheart before watching The Northman.
Robert Eggers' direction is absolutely flawless and he takes his dedication to create this film. This film is not as complicated and ambiguous as The Lighthouse and The Witch - in fact, Eggers even mentioned that this is for entertainment.
The plot is almost Gladiator, Hamlet and Braveheart combined together, however there is the inclusion of fate. The old English language may annoy some people, but I am not surprised he did it. I liked the surprising plot twist in this film. While the characters may lack empathy, I am personally fine with this, especially this is a revenge film. The introduction of the settings and characters are well done. Personally, I didn't like the fantasy elements as much, but overall, I loved the storyline.
The cast is perfect, especially Alexander Skarsgard being very vengeful. Many beautiful shots are in this film are inspired from Braveheart. The cinematography is not as innovative as The Lighthouse, but it is definitely one of the best looking films. Some people may complain this film being a slow burn, but I didn't feel this at all. The pacing is handled very well and I didn't get bored at all.
The action set pieces are very impressive and certainly create a true epic scope. The amount of research done is magnificent. The music does a nice job creating the suspenseful, but it is far from being a memorable score. There are excellent usage of visual effects and sound design.
I love this film a lot! Highly recommended if you can bear this!
