Donnie Darko

Donnie Darko ★★★★½

(Theatrical Cut) Strange...

The direction from Richard Kelly is brilliant and the screenplay is quite perplexing and bizarre. There is a lot of unexpected moments that involves sexual references. I found this film as an effective representation of a psychological disorder, as well as don't judge the book by its cover. The twist actually surprised me. There are some moments that are not necessary, but that is a minor issue. Donnie Darko's introduction is pretty good, but Darko's family introduction is not as solid and slightly confusing. The film also questions whether an action is right or wrong. A fascinating plot.

Jake Gyllenhaal is perfect as Donnie Darko and the rest of the cast is wonderful. I actually didn't realise Seth Rogen, Patrick Swayze and Katharine Ross are in this film. Jake's real-life sister, Maggie, is quite incredible!

The film is very dark at times, but it definitely suits the tone of the film. I find the pacing to be perfect and I didn't find any scenes to be boring. The music is foreboding and somehow the songs actually foreshadow what is happening.

This is an interesting film and a film I would like to explore more in the future. Highly recommended!
