Seven Samurai

Seven Samurai ★★★★★

tremendous. it's insane how much Kurosawa kind of "futureproofed" this film in terms of its very modern pacing, keeping up the momentum of its nearly 4-hour runtime through his juggling of tone and subplots, all addled along with the fluid motion of the camerawork and brisk editing. it never fails to feel fresh in each and every scene and shot, keeping us invested in its epic narrative despite the scope of the plot itself being confined to one village with an ensemble of seven main characters.

it's the most brisk film i've ever seen with this runtime, and there's so much detail put into each of the characters and their interactions that it just begs for an infinite number of subsequent rewatches. reading more into the production only enhances everything that unfolds, and it's easy to see why Kurosawa would get frustrated with studio intervention attempting to undercut his massive vision.

a timeless landmark and it deserves all the praise heaped upon it and more.
