Farcical allegories. Stilted dialogue. Weird sex stuff. Absurdist idiosyncrasies. Dark brand of surrealist humor. What else is there to say about the king of the Greek New Wave? Lanthimos always seems to resist categorization and defy expectation. That's what's cool about him. He’s anti-genre yet seems to have created his own formula. There are things we've come to recognize in his style and thematics, but his storytelling is always so bold and mysterious and at times mind-frying. I always know what to expect and never know where he's going. He's a filmmaker who's unmistakably avant-garde yet accessible, someone with a unique auteur signature who repeatedly draws me into his hypnotically weird worlds even when I don't care to fully grasp them.…
