Sergio Leone

Fans of Tarantino who’ve never seen Sergio Leone’s work will do well to check his stuff out. Grandiose, operatic, violent, elevating genre to the level of arthouse. The influence on QT is undeniable. I’ve seen a few Ford and Wayne westerns over the years and they ain’t nothing what Leone brings to the table. All the classic western iconography is present (guns, horses, wagons, saloons, desperadoes, etc.), but the style is so much cooler and operatic and punk rock in nature.

His game-changing entry into the genre feels at once attentive to the rules AND excited to break them. He’s one of the best cinematic iconoclasts of the frontier myth and its impact on the American Dream. He subverted the idealism…
