I’m just going to say it, I feel like I watched the wrong film because this sucked and I mean that in the most disappointing way possible. It’s surprisingly a mindless revenge flick I’ve seen over a thousand times.
With a promising first half, the film falls apart in the second for me. The story is riddled with dumb writing decisions and huge plot holes. It’s also not made for me since most of the film was pretty dull. The main character went from being a ruthless killing machine to a doofus the next. The ending was super predictable, and I felt like I wasted my time over nothing. In addition, I think it made the movie worse because of it.
I respect every person involved in the production because it’s a stunning looking movie with fantastic lighting and I love some of the impressive one take shots. Besides the wasted talent of the cast, they still pulled off good performances in the end.
To be honest, Robert Eggers is one of those directors that I can’t get into. I respect the craft of how much effort he puts into his projects, but his use of storytelling never hits with me. This was not good at all and I really wanted to like it. There are better revenge tales out there and this isn’t one of them.
