Hatching 2022
Came into a completely empty theater knowing practically nothing about this other than it being a horror movie. Really dug the hell out of this. This is one of those horror movies with a metaphor (I really hate the elevated horror term), but the horror elements here really work. A lot of different sub genres intertwined with each other. The film has a rather dark tone but still comes off as being wildly entertaining and gripping. The effects work is…

Everything Everywhere All at Once 2022
An all-timer. I started crying out of laughing too hard about three times during this. The film is something I sincerely hope becomes a landmark film in our culture. The action is terrific and is incredibly well shot and well directed. Yeoh gives a great performance and nails all versions of herself. Hsu has a breakout performance in this, she is amazing and I am excited to see more of her, she has several scene stealing moments. Quan was delightful…

The Cameraman 1928
Watched this in a theater with live accompaniment and wow, absolutely terrific stuff. Seeing a film like this with an audience was a delight, the gags here are killer. The entire swimming sequence is perfect, and the film builds from there, throwing in the best movie monkey and a really well shot exciting war sequence. Keaton is quite an athlete. The film also is rather well shot with a few inventive camera techniques and uses of sets that seem rather…

Belle 2021
It’s cute. There are a few problems with the third act, and the reveal didn’t work for me, but the animation and rest of the plot is fantastic. The movie is very funny and has a lot of heart. The voice work was well done. I liked the mix of 2D and 3D animation, both sides of the film looked good respectively. It’s a crowd pleaser, and is certainly hard not to enjoy. It’s not my favorite film from Hosoda but it’s a solid entry in his filmography. I recommend this one, hoping it gets some awards buzz for animated.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings 2021
I wasn’t told I couldn’t review this movie so….
I found myself, midway through the movie, almost forgetting that this was a Marvel movie. Aside from a few (fairly crucial) references and characters, this does feel like it’s own film. It is by far not the best film in the MCU, it falls into a lot of their cliches regarding plot structure, but it’s done really well. The action, as you might expect, is incredibly choreographed. It isn’t as strong…
