The Conjuring 2

The Conjuring 2 ★★★½

The first two installments of this series are exceptional examples of the best of the horror genre. There have been other recent worthy movies in the genre that also have well-constructed scenes that generate scares and generally set a strong mood of disorder and fear. But The Conjuring & its sequel stand apart from most all of those due to its great production values, excellent editing and camera work, along with the fine direction and casting.
Farmiga and Wilson are back as the paranormal investigators/exorcists. Their chemistry is another strength of these films, though Wilson is not quite on par with Farmiga. Also great in this one is the cast playing the family, led by young Madison Wolfe and the wonderful Frances O'Connor.
These are smart films, with puzzles to solve, palpable tension and despair, and genuine horror for a great many viewers. 3.8 stars
