Luke Ormsby’s review published on Letterboxd:
I went in with tempered expectations after hearing people say this felt like it had producer hands all over it. I don’t know what movie people watched but it wasn’t the one I watched.
I don’t know if you could find any other $90 million studio picture that feels any more like “the directors vision” than this.
It’s gritty and violent, it’s surreal and hypotonic, it takes its time and never once felt like it was restrained in any way. Also the testosterone levels are through the roof.
The only thing holding me back from a 5 star is that I wish the cinematography was a little more stylised with the same sort of artful taste and thought behind it as The Lighthouse. And I’ll always be nit picky about CGI which almost always takes me out of any moment, but unfortunately that just comes with the times we are living in.
*even if you are on the fence about liking this, go see it in the cinema and show support for it anyway. Either you’ll like it or you won’t and even if you don’t, you might love the next one - but there won’t be a next one if you don’t show up to this one.
