There's a dissonance in this between the tone of the film and Paul Muni's performance. Without Muni, this is a serious film about labor struggles, union busting scams, and goon squads that is pretty effective. But Muni gives an enormous, buffoonish, caricature performance that doesn't at all fit with the rest of the film. It's like if Mr. Bean played Norma Rae.

This is generally accepted as being the first modern heist movie, and it still holds up well. I think Rififi, which came out five years later and drew heavily from this, is a better film overall, but the plot beats established here wrote the blueprint for it and many other films.

Me pressing play: "There better be a fucking big wooden horse in this"

I love when you can tell an old film is pre-Code by how outrageously horny it is, and this certainly fits that description. I dug the effects, which seemed impressive to me by 1931 standards, and I liked the POV cinematography flourishes. And I definitely approve of Fredric March winning an Oscar for the dual titular roles, a rare horror performance honored by the Academy. That said, I giggled every time they pronounced it "Jee-kull" instead of "Jeck-ull", which is a lot. It just sounds so silly, even if it apparently is the correct pronunciation.
