Realized I never logged my favorite film of all time. Here’s what I wrote about it 2017:

The questions asked of us by Olivier Assayas in his second collaboration with Kristen Stewart swirl around the film like one of its spirits, haunting you and pulling at you. And like a spirit, the answers are often times easy to miss and if you do find them, they're inevitably hard to grapple with. Assayas weaves a brilliantly intricate tale of love, loss,…

Adored this. My favorite kind of messily indulgent and vulnerable filmmaking. It’s so audaciously open, wrestling with the dissolution of a marriage while embracing and dissecting every shitty conjecture made about her by the press. No wonder it was panned.

    “I noticed the hole.”

The hole in the wall acting as portal to the marriage’s past joys, failed hopes & everything in between is brilliant. Jolie turns our voyeurism of her & her marriage into a cathartic bit of foreplay, slowly bringing…

A brilliant parody of the art film as a concept, Robbe-Grillet smuggling a very funny fetish comedy inside of a sexy French Noir. Love the running thread of everything and nothing at all being revealed inside every compartment. Background gags looming over the proceedings begging you to try and deconstruct them.

The continuous push and pull of the writers’ proclivity towards twists, turns and kinks as they deconstruct the film themselves is fucking wild. It’s like if Last Year at Marienbad was treated with the seriousness of Burn After Reading. So so funny. So good.

    Blew me away.

You guys cannot be serious with this one. I’m chalking it up to worldwide Carbon Monoxide poisoning

Here’s a jumble of thoughts, too blown away to say anything coherent:

-Sure it looks unlike anything I’ve ever seen but it’s also just so beautiful thematically, almost simply so, that I just kept getting choked up lol. Love this world, love the people in it

-Sigourney Weaver is otherworldly in this. Her performance and character is some of the most moving work of hers and Cameron’s career

-The middle hour is so quiet and lovely that I could’ve…

I don’t do star ratings anymore but I needed something to reflect how much I hated this. Without exaggeration, genuinely one of the worst movies I’ve seen in well over a decade.

Each frame is put together with zero sense of space, blocking or depth. Your eye has nothing to center itself. Each take feels like the first and only. The backgrounds are flat, textureless mush. The entire film feels like the last day of senior year where everyone…
