Kiki's Delivery Service

Kiki's Delivery Service ★★★★

There is something admirably modest about Kiki's delivery service. Something simple, and yet it doesn't lose anything on Ghibli's magical charisma.

This is the small story of an adorable little witch and her furry friend Jiji, a cute black kitty, arriving amidst the jumbled daily life of the city by broom. Soon she finds work and lodging, under the loving care of a bakeries owner, and makes friends in the idyllic neighboorhood while flying around on her broomstick to deliver the delicious baked goods to all those picturesque homes. Her innocent clumsiness sometimes means trouble, as harmless as with every well meaning girl of her age.

Themes such as upcoming adulthood, friendship and the responsibilities that come with it are satisfyingly explored, resulting in an overall cute, light-hearted and affecting little tale, a pleasant slice of life drama, which might not rely as much on fantasy-based themes as other movies from Ghibli, but in the end might just be as heart-warming, touching and lovely. Hayao Miyazaki's storytelling remains as beautiful as always.
