2021 Cult Movie Challenge Week 18: 70s Disaster Movies

In a lot of ways, this movie feels like more subplots than actual plots. You could even say that what would be considered the main plot, the guy with the bomb, doesn't even start until around halfway through the movie. When the movie is over two hours long, this could be seen as a problem. Fortunately however, I was having a pretty good time with the subplot stuff leading up to…

Goddamn I wasn't expecting this to hit me as hard as it did. The themes of delusion and greed, and the central story of a man losing himself while trying to make something of himself for he and his family definitely resonated with me. I'm not making pottery, but I work a job that keeps me farther from home than I'd like to be while on the cusp of becoming a dad. I know it's not a direct parallel but…

2021 Cult Movie Challenge Week 34: Claudio Fragasso

Not the sleaze fest I was expecting based on the poster. Kind of drags its feet during the first act, but things start to get more interesting once the two main characters go on the run, and eventually everything ramps up and it culminates in a way better finale than I was expecting.

Some pretty solid visual effects too, with some decent looking gore. It's used sparingly, but when it's there it…

2021 Cult Movie Challenge Week 32: Something Weird Video

The very first shot of this movie is a close-up of Chesty Morgan's giant chesties, and it freezes with a big music sting before showing the title, so right away this movie lets you know what it is, and where it's taking you. The story, for the most part, is a fairly standard crime revenge movie, albeit with its visuals highly centered around the signature breasts of the movie's star. A…

This movie feels like two giant middle fingers: one aimed at the world and the other aimed at the audience. Much like The Alchemist character leads world leaders on a journey into essentially nothing under the guise of enlightenment, Jodorowsky also leads the audience on a parallel trek, both culminating at the same dead end.

Can't believe there are people out there who still think drugs are bad when something like this exists.

Often overlooked in Leone's small-but-impressive filmography, this late entry into the realm of spaghetti westerns feels pretty different from Leone's other works in the genre. It still has the subtle comedy, and a touch of the cynicism, but it ventures into something bigger than his previous westerns, at least thematically. Rather than a movie about bounty hunters and sheriffs, the movie begins to make you think it's going to be about a robbery but ends up pulling the rug out…

    Roadgames (1981)

    8/10

Although the "movie-ness" of the plot and the forced elements to make it a homage to Hitchcock can be felt all the way through, it still manages to be fun, entertaining and at times chilling romp that doesn't let you off until the end. There's a lot of hostility towards the main character in the film so you feel compelled to side with him, and his demeanor and humor are approachable, making it an exceptional case of…

    Spooktober 2021, Movie 16

This movie hits the ground running and never stops, and while that can make some movies feel exciting or exhilarating, it doesn't really work here. And it's happening two-fold, as the movie not only rushes from character to character at an insane pace, but within the scenes themselves everything happening is so chaotic, the movie never takes time to breathe. Slasher movies work well when they build tension, and outside of one single, relatively self-contained scene…

2021 Cult Movie Challenge Week 39: 80s Horror
    Spooktober 2021, Movie 15

This movie has an almost quaint feel to it. Like a group of people were just like "yeah we have access to this filming location so let's just shoot a horror movie here" and they did. I looked up the woman who played the killer and this is her only Letterboxd credit, and her Wikipedia page said she only acted in two movies (this one, and a minor…

Oh man, they really said Myers was “the anger that divides us”… Halloween Kills doesn’t feel like a Halloween movie at all. Very sad that this turned out to not be my jam.
