Elvis ★★½

I cannot fathom why Baz decided to make this film from The Colonel’s (Tom Hanks) point of view. The bad accent, bad make up, corny lines, etc. take you out of the magic that is Austin Butler. The film’s saving grace is Austin completely becoming Elvis Presley. There were moments where I had to double takes because I could not believe how perfect a performance this man gave. Giving Elvis emotional layers is a difficult task considering his fame is rooted in a time where we didn’t have access to them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. But I was so moved at what Austin did on screen. I really really wanted this to be a Baz masterpiece, but it just didn’t deliver.
