    Rewatched on the Criterion Channel

    Watching mad dog Ray Liotta turn this film up to 11... truly something. I love how he basically drags Jeff Daniels and Melanie Griffith's characters down to hell when he takes them to that motel. Liotta epitomized "unhinged," and he did it right out of the gate with this, his first major role. He sure does rock those tight jeans as well.

    RIP legend.

    I'm finding it so difficult to describe these films by Johnnie To, because they're really unlike anything I've ever seen. They almost feel operatic with their sweeping movements, their rising scores, their lyricism. In the midst of Exiled, you also have a buddy hangout plot thrown in for good measure. Plus gun bullet ballet!

Everything stews in this gloomy tone; characters aren't written like they actually know each other. Even the world building on display, no doubt impressive in its scope, scale,…

    :: Spotlight Narrative

    As soon as I finished watching Pan Nalin’s Last Film Show, I thought about watching Giuseppe Tornatore’s Cinema Paradiso to compare. Nalin’s film, about a nine-year-old Indian boy who becomes enthralled with film and befriends a theatre’s projectionist, recalls the synopsis of the 1988 Italian classic instantly. But then I thought to myself, what was there to be gained from this experience (besides a night spent with another fantastic film)? Last Film Show,…
