The Kid

The Kid ★★★★½

Chaplin, man. One of the most compassionate filmmakers there ever will be. The kid making pancakes. The window-breaking scheme, flinging paint on cops. Watching as his birth mother, unknowingly, offers charity and is playing with and lovingly holding another kid, the cruel irony. "Charity - to some a duty, to others a joy." The dream sequence, squalor and industrial decay turned to fresh paint and flowers. Losing his adopted son, the pain on the kid's face. The restoration by Criterion of all his films continues to look incredible. Ending a bit rushed and would be perfected by him in later movies, but, the craft and humanity are undeniable.
