Intolerable Cruelty is the 2003 romantic comedy film co-written, co-produced and directed by the Coen Brothers. The film stars George Clooney, Catherine Zeta Jones and Billy Bob Thornton in story of top divorce lawyer Miles who specialises in helping people avoid paying expensive settlements.

My god Marylin, you're exposed.

The Coens bring Clooney from O Brother, Where Art Thou? along with Billy Bob Thornton and Richard Jenkins from The Man Who Wasn't There but didn't bring their 'A' game, perhaps that being due to influence both in the writing and production of Intolerable Cruelty which is unusual for the them. It's also unusual that the movie isn't set in a earlier setting such as their prior films, with the film being a modern take on the hollow divorce legal proceedings there is very little wiggle room here for the Coen to place their own creative stamp on it. It's not completely devoid of their familiar features, the oddball comedy seeps in at times but overall this title feels very flat.

I was most surprised by how shallow and predictable the story was, it's never fleshed out as a fully fledged Coens production. The performances are ok but nobody is providing their best, the characters lack many interesting features and the comedy falls back on laziness that includes alot of screaming. It speaks volumes about modern marriage values but doesn't 'nail' its overall story development.
