I have some mixed thoughts on the series. It has some genuinely great moments with emotional heft and Rei, Asuka and Katsuragi were fun as characters. The ending wasn't spectacular but it sort of worked. I appreciated the novelty and there is a discernible character arc. Shinji was by far the least interesting of the main characters so the parts focusing on him were the weakest.
