Can’t give it a fair rating yet because the version I rented on Amazon was only available in English dub. The dub is dreadful, it felt like I was watching Birdemic. The parts where there wasn’t dialogue were really good though, the scene in the night where Tokyo is lit up solely by Godzilla as he destroys the city is really spectacular though. I will try to find a sub version so I can give it an actual rating.

This was a lot darker than I imagined it would be. Starts off as a pretty standard quirky rom-com, but surprisingly, and definitely more interestingly it really explores anxiety and depression. Something which isn’t done often enough in Japan and Japanese cinema. The contrast between reality and the fantasy inside Yoshika’s head is really well done. Mayu Matsuoka is really great in this and my main man Kanji Furutachi pops up too!

It’s not my favourite of Kon’s films, but I think this might be the most beautiful anime film I’ve ever seen?? The art, the soundtrack, the story. What a loss to cinema he is. Not just one of the great directors of animation, but one of the great directors of film. I feel so proud that I could see the references to old Japanese films too!

This was like someone asked Nobuhiko Obayashi to make a movie, but he had never seen a movie before and he didn’t have any idea what they were. House is like he has just invented film, there are no rules yet, and we are left with an absurdist masterpiece.
