Brett Doze’s review published on Letterboxd:
I haven't seen this in I don't know how long, but it holds up really well. I remember when this came out, 8-year-old Brett thought it was the greatest movie ever made. While I don't hold it in that high of a regard now, it is great fun from beginning to end.
It's still wild to me that Johnny Depp got an Oscar nomination for this. He is really good in the film, it's just not something I would expect from the Academy. But if I'm honest, I think my favorite performance of the film is that of Geoffrey Rush. He's such a sinister villain while also having a weird charm that I can't explain.
This movie is the definition of swashbuckling action, and I'm still impressed by the effects of the skeleton army. The film reaches a satisfying conclusion, and though the series never lived up to this film, I can imagine all of us were ready for more adventures from Captain Jack Sparrow in 2003.
