Baylor Barnett’s review published on Letterboxd:
Came for the robots and existential quandaries, stayed for the absurdly well-animated homoerotic piano playing.
Interesting meta-narrative that’s unfortunately frustrating in practice, and definitely not in a good way for the most part. There’s just not enough time spent fleshing everything out.
It ends up being wide as the ocean but deep as a puddle in everything except Shinji’s development, which isn’t as deep as it could be because there’s just not enough time dedicated to that.
Could’ve been a great 2+ hour movie, but is instead an ok hour and a half.
Stellar presentation though, and the sound design was absolutely phenomenal, so yeah I don’t know.
Hoping the next (and final) film can stick the landing, whenever the hell that comes out.
