Basti’s review published on Letterboxd:
Man, I am glad I watched this again!
I saw The Godfather 3 years ago for the first time. Then, I did not like it very much... I thought it was too long and not special. And Boy was I wrong!
The Godfather is a cinematic masterpiece! Francis Ford Coppola achieved something magnificent here. Something that will always be considered as one of the greatest!
Normally, I have problems with movies that long. But not here. The story caught and captured me right in the beginning and I couldn‘t really stop until it was over.
The score. Just brilliant. It sounds pretty melancholic and puts the movie in that special mood, that stays all the way through the three hour runtime.
The acting. Just brilliant as well. Every time Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) is on screen, he owns it! He completely catches the audiences attention. When he is on screen, the mood of the movie gets stronger and stronger.
Al Pacino is, as always, magnificent here. He plays his role perfectly! For example the restaurant scene reaches its tension climax through the look in Michaels face.
You always wonder:
***SPOILER***
„Is he going to kill them?“
Al Pacino shows that he is indecisive perfectly. The scene is also made by the brilliant sound design. The sound of the talking slowly being drowned by the sound of the train in the background shows that the talking is not important right now. What is important is, what is going on in michaels head.

Also, this was the first movie, where I realized how much the way and position, the light is placed effects the movie. Without that, the movie would have never reached the perfect atmosphere is has now.
I only have one problem with this film. I think some jumps in time make some things seem kind of abrupt, but that did not make any difference on how amazed I am right now.
Apart from that, I think this movie is perfect! Francis Ford Coppola made an absolute masterpiece!
