    Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy

    Winks so much you'd think it was a blepharospasm, but I can't deny that I had a tremendous time with Zach Cregger's wicked film. Perpetually subverting expectations, the enterprise succeeds by positioning its concerns within nightmarish modern maladies, while acknowledging the toxic patriarchy that has its roots buried deep within the terra firma, sapping the life from everything around it. Smart, slick effort that somehow makes both Jane Eyre AND Justin Long interesting.

    Possesses the clinical efficiency of Steven Soderbergh's "one-for-me" stories while imbued with a warmth that I tend to associate with the Dardenne Brothers. Part of it is that Aubrey Plaza's role here is just a shade away from Émilie Dequenne's performance from Rosetta. I think this may be closest I've seen to an American-version of a Dardenne film. Which is a revelation in itself, sure, but I'm still kind of reeling from the fact that Plaza had this in her.
