This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

An intriguing morality play, anchored by some remarkable formal flourishes and a thematically rich idea that sputters out because of Shyamalan's outmoded narrative tendencies. Yet the film survives in spite of the torrent of banalities! I was especially impressed with Gael García Bernal, whose line reading of "oh no" as his vision declines gave me some serious Cronenberg-vibes. And the blurry knife-fight at the film's end is a remarkable craft element that I'm not going to soon forget.

I'm constantly in flux about this film, likely the most mediocre movie I keep going back to. I'm never sure if I've moved forward, fallen behind, or just simply circle around what it's trying to do. When I saw it in 2009 I, like most guys in their early 20s, related to JGL's character. i'm cynical and despondent and it's funny how the more times i return to this film, the more i relate to Roger (I usually had a kinship to the anomie that Florence experienced). i'm teetering closer to 40. had two trips to a psych ward already and can't help the thoughts from flooding back any time i'm triggered by my failures and past relationships. "hurt people hurt people" and that kind of banal platitude made me scoff when i was…

I find the notion of shunning or, as it's been reframed, "Cancel Culture" to be ideologically inane, and remarkably idiotic in demonstrating any sense of what it means to repair relationships. It sucks that Louis C.K. fucked up. It sucks that I've fucked up. I would like to hope that there's a world out there for me that lets me try to mend. But the Twitter mob makes it abundantly clear that communication and repair are overwhelmingly less favorable when…
