Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure ★★★★

So right after New Mutants, I decided to turn this gem on and get prepared for the new film. Two seemingly dumb teens set off on a quest to prepare the ultimate historical presentation with the help of a time machine. This is one that I was so fearful to go back to, and that is mostly because I was imagining the VFX in my head. They aren’t the best, and that had me worried, but watching it through (again) made me realize how authentic they actually were. Everything about this film works on a ridiculous level. I can’t sit here and say it’s “phenomenal screenwriting at work,” but there is something about it that stands out above most movies from that time. A lot of it has to do with the chemistry between our leads. Keanu is obviously a treasure, but Alex Winter crushes as well. It’s the beginning of a beautiful friendship, but it’s also a film that takes on so much.

We have the future, time travel, iconic individuals, and the most excellent guitar riffs. The basis is friendship, and that is what truly allows our characters to thrive, as they make the perfect duo. The lines, line delivery, and catch-phrases throughout had my wife and I giggling. George Carlin as Rufus has to be the best aspect of the film other than the leads. His presence was so missed in the third (review coming), and he was just a fantastic actor. It was a brilliant throwback all-around. It is absolutely not film for everyone though. This is very much a cult movie and for good reason. There are a few elements that do not hold up, and some of the jokes fall flat, but who am I to lie and say I didn’t have a blast with this rewatch? I was so nervous pressing play, but it was such a pleasant experience. The first Bill & Ted is still the best Bill & Ted in my opinion, but the franchise is solid all-around.

Also, I am still devastated over the death of Chadwick Boseman. This news tonight has shocked the movie-space. I truly hope the world takes time and revisits his performances. I hope to watch one as soon as I can. R.I.P. Chadwick🙏🏻
