...could be the greatest movie I’ve ever seen, could be hollow, pointless garbage. Either way, it’s a perfect movie for the last few years: paranoia, pop-culture, conspiracy. Disillusionment towards life and enrapture, even worship towards Hollywood, glamourized celebrity content to be consumed by the masses, cocooning a shady verge known only to the most powerful and the theorists on the fringes of society. I can barely grasp so many of the concepts at play here, and the disorienting presentation of…

Yes, it's that good. See it in a theatre, if you can!

I'm just shocked at how genuine this is. About every emotional beat is effective, and not a single one feels duplicitious or artificial. I appreciate that so much. In this endlessly energetic movie, stuffed with a plethora of ingenious ideas and vibrant oddities, the familial story it revolves around is so much more affecting than I would have guessed. The perfect dose of heart elevates what…

Summer Scavenger Hunt Prompt #23 (20/25)

A slice-of-life snapshot into a mid-90s childhood, solid but ultimately a bit unremarkable. The atmosphere and characters are done well enough that I wouldn't mind rewatching or seeing more of this. Hope to see more directorial efforts from Jonah Hill, this is an excellent debut.

    Film Club Pick #7
    Chosen by yours truly

All in all, certainly a top 2 movie about a terminally ill hat-wearing man's newfound appreciation for life.

A topic covered in many films I've seen recently the distinction between truly living and... simply surviving. Our protagonist, Kanji Watanabe, seems to have been doing the latter for decades, but a cancer diagnosis sets off his search for meaning in a vast and often uncompromising world. When it comes to analyzing these themes,…

"So with sadness in my heart,
Feel the best thing I could do,
Is end it all and leave forever.
What's done is done, it feels so bad
What once was happy now is sad,
    I'll never love again
    my world is
    ending.
    "

Horrifying, yet absolutely stunning. There's no doubt in my mind when I label this a masterpiece.

Builds upon Takahata's oft-explored themes of nature, sorrow, and coming-of-age to create a perfect swan song. Simply and purely beautiful, a remarkable achievement for anyone involved. Perhaps much of my love for this stems from the animation; the lush watercolour artwork is stunning, impeccably rendering every second, every emotion of this thing. But there's also an affecting storyline, even if it loses me every now and then.

I'd say most issues here come from the pacing. The movie drags for…
